Welcome to Wairoa

As an official i-SITE Visitor Information and Travel Centre, our consultants can offer friendly and informative advice on what to see and do when you are in the Wairoa District.  In addition, we will help make your journey throughout New Zealand affordable and easy.  Just come in and we will help with your reservations for travel by coach and ferry.

We also offer collector stamps featuring the different areas such as Mahia, Morere, Nuhaka and Waikaremoana.  They are $4.50 per book of ten.  Due to popular demand we now offer postcards featuring 5 Photo's of the Wairoa District.  For those of you who haven't seen them please pop into the Information Centre.

Hunkered down comfortably on the delta of the wide Wairoa River, the town of Wairoa

is the hub of the Wairoa region of New Zealand.

From this peaceful country town, where native Maori and European traditions merge,

a vast canvas of stunning landscapes, fascinating histories and outdoor

recreational attractions unfold.

Travel the southern reaches of the Pacific Coast Highway on the North Island's

eastern seaboard to explore this land of sunny beaches and wild headlands,

rushing rivers, shining lakes and virgin bush-clad mountains.

Here you will discover forest-fringed Lake Waikaremoana - the centrepiece

of New Zealand's third largest national park, Te Urewera. Relax at the

hot pool spa at Morere after fishing, diving or simply exploring the seaside

escape and fisherman's mecca of Mahia Peninsula.

Local Attractions

There are a number of special and remarkable walkways located on public conservation land with the Wairoa district.  Times stated are one-way only and are aimed at those of average fitness however it is wonderful time for your family to become surrounded by natural beauty.  The spectacular sights and natural beauty need to be enjoyed so be sure to allow enough time to take memorable photographs that you and your family can enjoy.

All walks are well maintained and well marked however for personal safety walkers are advised to wear sturdy footwear.  For walks longer than 1.5 hours warm clothing is advisable. For longer walks lunch, drink and a rainproof coat are necessary as the weather can change suddenly.

Te Reinga Falls

Located 35Km inland from Wairoa just off SH 36 (Tiniroto Rd).  Turn onto Ruakituri Road at Te Reinga, cross the bridge over the river.  The car park is at the western end of the bridge.  A few minutes walk from the car park and picnic area takes you to the lookout to view the spectacular 35 metre falls of the Hangaroa and Ruakituri rivers combine to form the Wairoa River.  Duration of walk 15mins.
